I was elected to Ledbury Town Council in 2000 as an Independent Councillor. In 2003/4 and 2008/9 I served as Mayor of Ledbury: in 2003 I welcomed Her Majesty the Queen to Ledbury. Other highlights in that year included welcoming the crew of HMS Ledbury to the town for a parade and Thanksgiving Service for their safe return to UK after their service in the Gulf War. As Mayor I successfully campaigned for the reopening of Ledbury Youth Centre in 2003 (it had been closed for 18 months), and the reopening of the Heritage Centre in May 2009. Youth provision has been one of my main aims, and in 2003 the Skate Park was opened on the Recreation Ground. During my two years as Mayor I have raised over £9,000 for charity: in 2003/4 I supported Multiple Sclerosis and local youth sporting clubs, and in 2008/9 McMillan Renton Appeal for Radiotherapy Unit.I have lived in Ledbury in the same house for 40 years since I moved to Herefordshire to take up a middle management post at Hereford Sixth Form College.
I have served as Chairman of the Planning Committee and Vice-Chairman of Environment & Leisure Committee. I represent Ledbury Town Council on many outside bodies Including Herefordshire Association of Local Councils.
Locally I have served as Chairman of the Civic Society and Chairman of the local Alcohol and Drugs Forum. One of my main interests is Morris Dancing, and I belong to the Silurian Border Morris Men who have revived the local dances of Herefordshire and Worcestershire. Two of our main events are dancing in Ledbury on Boxing Day and the Wassailing tradition at Much Marcle in early January.
